Match vs Manchester - 2026

Our annual friendly match against Manchester took place over two days. Day 1 at Gosforth Golf Club. Day 2 at Northumberland golf club.

The weather forecast on day 1, was not very encouraging. However, it did not transpire as predicted. We all assembled at Gosforth, for soup and sandwiches prior to play. All pairings were matched up and ready to start the 47th annual match. Included in our team, were the liaison officers from Morpeth and Wooler. Northumberland took a 5-2 lead on day 1, a great start for the home team.

The Manchester team were staying at the 3-mile hotel. Arrangements were made by the home players to collect their team. The evening meal held at Gosforth Golf Club, of roast beef, plus trimmings were delightfully served, followed by a desert of cheesecake. Following the meal, speeches by the captains were well received, and both acknowledged the camaraderie and friendship that has built up over the years. The drinks and banter continued throughout the night.

Day 2, took us to Northumberland Golf Club, a brighter day, with a slight breeze. We assembled at 8.30 am for a bacon sarnie, for a 9.30 start. The course was in great shape; this was echoed by our guests. Manchester came back fighting, winning the second session 4-3. Overall, Northumberland were the victors 8-6 picking up the Jack Spedding Trophy, the first time in 3 years.

Over the two days, the home Captain provided Fletchers Port for the nearest the pins. The Manchester players of Simon Ellery (Gosforth) and Tony Gregory (Northumberland) were the recipients.

Following the golf, a light lunch was enjoyed by all. Captain Keith of Manchester, handed over the trophy to the home Captain. Both Captains, congratulated both teams for the excellent two days, for the warmth and sportsmanship shared by all.

As the Manchester team departed, the traditional guard of honour was formed by the home players. A team photo was enjoyed by all outside the Northumberland Golf Club patio area. Captain Dave

An annual friendly team match played between The Society of Manchester & District Golf Captains and The Society of Northumberland Golf Captains.

Played over two days on two different courses with teams of 14 players in seven two-man teams.

The format is better ball match play.
